10 Important Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Tips & Tricks

After four years in development, Respawn Entertainment has finally released the long-awaited sequel to Jedi: Fallen Order. This one takes place during the events of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series and is just as challenging as the 2019 game. But with our Star Wars Jedi: Survivor tips and tricks, the Force will always be with you.

1) Think about your attacks

Like its predecessor, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is a souls-like. Button mashing won’t get you far and you’ll die faster than you’d like. This is because animations can’t be canceled. Once you start an attack, it will be fully executed.

Therefore, plan your swordfights carefully and only launch an attack when it makes tactical sense. Timing is the key to success. One exception is fighting with two weapons at the same time. In the tradition of Ahsoka Tanos, two Lightsabers can be used for fast and merciless fights in which the individual attacks can be canceled. Simply use the block button.

The downside is that the dual attacks do less damage and you take more hits. There are five different stances Cal can take with his lightsaber. Depending on the combat situation, a different style is appropriate.

  • One-handed (against one or a few opponents)
  • Two-handed (against armored opponents and bosses)
  • Two swords (against few, fast enemies)
  • Double sword (against large groups of enemies)
  • blaster + saber (against distant enemies)

You change your lightsaber stance at a meditation point in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Not all stances are available at the beginning. You’ll learn them as you progress through the missions.

2) Star Wars Jedi: Survivor tips: Use the Force

As a real Jedi, you don’t just fight with your sword and blaster, you also use your Force abilities. For example, you can push enemies off ledges to kill them instantly or pull weak enemies towards you to take them down in melee fights. You can also throw them at other enemies to give yourself an advantage.

Cal’s abilities in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor are very versatile, and the most efficient way to use them in combat is in combination with your normal attacks. For example, DT Sentry Droids can be knocked down and then dealt with using a lightsaber.

It’s a similar story to the Purge Troopers. They will attack you if you pull them towards you. But since the attack is very predictable, you can dodge it well. This will cause your opponent to lose a good amount of stamina, so you can hit them with your lightsaber after they slash.

3) Which Force skills should you learn first?

As you earn XP and complete Force Tears in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, you’ll earn skill points that you can invest in the game’s skill trees. In the beginning, you should focus on the middle one to increase your resistance. Improve the Stim formula and the “The Power of Friendship” skill so that each time you use the Stim, it restores one of your powers in addition to your health.

The Force skills of Confounded Mind, Unrelenting Pull, and Redirected Strength are also very useful in the beginning. To unlock a higher skill, you must first unlock the lower skill. So sometimes it can be useful to save up skill points until you can unlock a particular line of the skill you want.

4) Learn to parry

Parrying is essential in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. EA did not only use the Souls series as a model for the combat system but also another game from From Software: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Similar to the Shinobi, Cal can block attacks by interrupting them at the right moment. Unlike in Sekiro, however, the time window for parrying is quite generous.

Still, it’s important not to block too early or too late. As with Cal’s attacks, the block animation can’t be interrupted. So if you get your timing wrong and block too early, you won’t be able to follow up with a second block when the opportunity arises.

5) Dodging is essential

Mastering the art of dodging is just as important as parrying. When Cal makes his roll, you’ll notice that he’s blurry for a short time. During that moment, you’re invulnerable. This only applies to the first roll. If you tap the dodge button twice in a row, you’ll also make two rolls. However, the invincibility frames are only available for the first roll.

Dodging can be your salvation in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, especially when things get dicey and multiple enemies are attacking you at the same time. If you press the dodge button at the last moment, just before you’re attacked, you’ll make a precision roll. You’ll then be able to attack again much more quickly, and you’ll also regain some of your health. The Swift Focus skill can even increase the power gain from the precision roll.

6) Listen for enemy sounds

Attacks can be anticipated not only visually, but also acoustically. Therefore, one of our most important Star Wars Jedi: Survivor tips is to focus on the game’s sound design and observe your surroundings with all your senses. When exploring a planet, listen for enemies before each turn.

Some enemy types are camouflaged and can only be located by their sounds. Also, some attacks are triggered by sounds. For example, hovering droids will emit a clear audible signal before activating their blasters. Melee fighters will often let out a grunt or growl before delivering a blow. Over time, it will become second nature to instinctively hit the block button when you hear one of these sounds.

The sound design in Jedi: Survivor is not only impressive and of high quality, but it’s also a great help that you should take advantage of. It allows you to spot ambushes early and better judge enemy animations. If you want to time your parries and dodges correctly, it’s important to pay attention to the audio cues.

7) Go after the weak first

Some enemies in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor are bullet sponges and others are cannon fodder. The latter are the ones to eliminate first. A B1 Droid or a simple Stormtrooper can be finished off by Cal with a single slash of his lightsaber. Concentrate on them first before going after the B2 Droids or Purge Troopers in a confrontation.

Finally, multiple enemies at the same time are a big threat. That’s why you want to reduce the number of enemies as quickly as possible at the beginning of a fight, and then work your way through the heavy hitters one by one.

8) Throw back the explosives

Here’s a rule of thumb: whenever you see something round in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, use your Force ability to throw it at your opponents. At worst, it’ll be a meaningless object and nothing will happen. At best, it’s explosive and does a lot of damage. The explosives the droids throw at you can also be thrown back.

But you have to be quick. The time between throwing and detonation is short. The floating Droids can also be thrown at other enemies, causing them to explode.

9) Use your companions

Similar to God of War or Horizon Forbidden West, companions can now be used in combat. They can either act automatically or receive direct commands from you. Using Bode Akuna as an example, the following is possible: You can hurl a Probe Droid into a group of enemies, and without saying a word, Bode will shoot at them, causing AOE damage.

Or you can tell Bode to ram an enemy with his jetpack. He’ll then dropkick the enemy and activate a shock grenade. This gives you a lot of strategic options in the fights in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

10) Dying in a boss fight can be an advantage

It may sound paradoxical at first, but when you encounter a particularly stubborn boss in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, it can make sense to choose strategic suicide. This is because when you lose to a boss, you leave a respawn point at the location of your death. Similar to the Dark Souls and Elden Ring universes, this gives you back your progress, but it also has a function beyond that.

If you collect it, your health and power will be fully restored. Use this to your advantage by claiming the restoration during battle rather than immediately.
