In the open-world adventure The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, you’ll take on the role of the witcher Geralt of Rivia and overcome dangers in a breathtaking fantasy world. Your travels will take you through beautiful landscapes as you search for a child of the prophecy. To help you become the most powerful witcher, we provide you with important The Witcher 3 tips and tricks for a successful start.

1) Enemy scaling

In The Witcher 3, your enemies remain at a constant level, so they don’t scale. So if you move in high-level areas, you won’t have a chance to prevail against the enemies there at the beginning of the game. An example of such an area is Toussaint.

However, you don’t start the game there, but in White Orchard and there the enemies are at a much lower level, which allows you to prevail against them. Areas like Toussaint can only be visited after completing the main story.

However, enemy scaling can be activated in the “Game” option of the menu. Afterward, if you meet your former adversaries in White Orchard and take them down again, you’ll receive rewards.

2) Don’t use Fast Travel at the beginning

Instead of using the numerous fast-travel checkpoints in The Witcher 3, it’s better to always travel to the next quest with Roach in the beginning.

This has the advantage that the map expands and question marks will pop up. These mark places worth seeing, where you can take on various sidequests or generate skill points. It’s best to plan your travels so that you pass by as many of these question mark locations as possible.

3) Check out notice boards, books, and notes

You’ll find notice boards in almost every settlement in The Witcher 3, and through them, you’ll receive new orders as well as quests. These are written down on notes, which you can easily collect and read afterward.

Through these tasks and quests, you’ll explore the witcher’s world and unlock additional tasks and side quests. Furthermore, you’ll come across books and notes in all possible places of the open-world game, and by reading them you’ll receive hints for additional quests, recipes, and achievements.

Keep in mind that you really have to read the note or the book to “activate” the hint. However, just clicking on one of these items is enough, so you don’t have to internalize the full text.

4) The Witcher 3 tips and tricks: Buy a torch

If you don’t find a torch during your travels, you should buy one from the merchant as soon as possible. In a large number of dungeons, or various interiors, it is pitch black and you can see almost nothing.

Thus, a torch is an indispensable item for you to find your way around the game. Finally, if you have a torch in your inventory, you don’t have to worry about it being useless after a short time because torches can be used forever in The Witcher 3.

5) Loot as much as possible

If you pass houses on the way, take what you can carry, as long as you’ve checked beforehand whether there are guards nearby. You’ll also loot some items that you won’t find any use for, but these items can be sold to merchants.

Besides, some items can be dismantled in The Witcher 3, which in turn generates resources for creating new pieces of equipment. Crowns are the in-game currency and you can use them to repair your equipment, for example.

However, always keep track of the free space in your inventory. If you overload your carrying capacity, you’ll go limp and your movement options will be very limited.

The solution to this problem is Roach’s saddlebags since the horse doesn’t mind a lot of weight. You can also purchase larger bags from merchants to increase your storage space.

6) Tips on alchemy

Alchemy enables you to make weapon oils, decoctions, bombs as well as potions. You don’t have to use alchemy at all, except for a few times in selected quests, but the products come highly recommended.

They give you an enormous advantage in fights, and once you make them, they replenish all by themselves during your travels or your mediations. This means that you only have to buy the ingredients for a potion once. However, you need to have a certain amount of alcohol in stock.

If you want to craft something, you don’t need a special workbench or anything similar in The Witcher 3. Instead, you can start crafting items directly from the alchemy menu.

Recipes tell you which items are needed to create a certain item and what effect they have. Note that recipes disappear once you’ve obtained the product. Some items, which are necessary for the production, you have to craft yourself first. Furthermore, they are often available from the alchemy merchant or herbalist.

Recipes for various crafting ideas can be found all over the world.  There’s an especially high chance to find them in dungeons or crates. They are also available at the alchemy merchant whom you can find where the potion icon is on the map.

7) Search for places of power

At the places of power or runestones, you can meditate and receive a buff as well as an ability point. So through these places, you can increase your amount of skill points especially well.

Especially question marks far away from the paths, i.e. in the wilderness, indicate places of power. The colors and the symbols on the respective runestones decide about the buff you get. Purple stands for Yrden, yellow for Quen, green for Axii, blue for Aard, and red for Igni.

8) Meditation in Witcher 3

Especially at the beginning of the game, when you’re still on a lower difficulty level, you can use meditation to regenerate. Later on, this is no longer possible.

Your potions, oils, decoctions, and bombs will be replenished, but buffs obtained through decoctions will lose their effect through meditation. You must also have Alcohest in your inventory for your items to be fully replenished.

9) The Witcher 3 tips on witcher signs in dialogue

You as Geralt of Rivia can make use of different witcher signs in The Witcher 3.

The witcher signs are:

  • Aard – generates a telekinetic blast wave
  • Igni – fire spell
  • Yrden – magical trap
  • Quen – a protective shield
  • Axii – influences the mind of your opponent

Axii also improves your dialogues when you upgrade it in the character menu. With the help of Axii, you’ll be more convincing in dialogues and you’ll have completely new ways of communicating or talking with your opponent. Some options will only be available to you if you skilled Axii, which can give you a great advantage.
