Valheim delivers a grandiose gaming experience for survival fans. The setting and possibilities are extensive, and best of all, the whole thing is still being further developed! With our PLITCH Valheim tips and tricks, you’re off to a solid start. What do you build first? How do you get resources and where is the merchant in Valheim? In addition: If things are going too slow for you, our PLITCH Valheim PC cheats will help you.

Valheim Beginner Tips

These are the things you should do in Valheim at the beginning:

  • Gather wood for building
  • Build a workbench with a roof
  • Build a storage room for your resources and equipment
  • Repair your tools
  • Get the "Rested" buff

1) Collect wood

Wood is an important resource in Valheim. You need it for various construction projects. It’s important to know that you can’t only collect the branches on the ground but also bring down tree trunks with your fists – so use your bare hands on small trees. From the obtained wood and stones lying around you can immediately make an axe. Now it's time to tackle the really big trees.

2) What should you build first?

Even if having your own house is very tempting, you should build it in the end. First of all, you have to collect a lot of wood. Since night falls quickly, your priority is survival.

To increase the probability of this, using the collected resources at the beginning is very important. Therefore, you build a workbench and a roof first.

Tip: To save yourself some trouble, you should use slanted roof panels here. Some people have already despaired at this point because they had used floor panels.

Afterward, you make sure that you have a sleeping place and a campfire for minimum comfort. Your start in Valheim consists of a workbench, a bed, and a light-giving fire. A house is not important at this point. So, here’s what you build first:

  • Axe
  • Workbench with shelter
  • Sleeping place
  • Campfire
  • Cooking station

The rest of the materials, if you have some left or as soon as you have some available, is to be invested in a crate to store items. Furthermore, to expand the base, you will need a pick.

3) Building parts can be demolished again

If you’ve already started building something and changed your mind about it or simply placed a building partly in an unfavorable way, don't panic. You can simply tear these things down again.

To do this, select the hammer and perform the actions that would be needed for a new part. Clicking the middle mouse button, however, will place the new piece on top of the old one, removing the latter.

You get back some raw materials for the actual construction. This way, you don't just tear down parts of the house, but objects as well. If you want to know more about building in Valheim, check out our detailed Building Guide.

4) Build a storage room

To make collecting resources much easier, you need a storage room. This is mandatory at some point, as you simply have to store your collected resources somewhere.

In addition, you'll probably want to upgrade your equipment at some point. This will also require a lot of materials, although at the beginning you will mainly store wood, meat, and leather.

If the storage room is then equipped with boxes, you'll have enough space to optimally store and, above all, sort everything from your forays. This will help you keep track of everything later on.

5) Repairing is free

As usual in survival games, your tools and weapons lose their durability. So, the more often you use it, the more likely it is to break. To prevent this, you can repair tools and weapons on the workbench.

This is free of charge and helps you save resources. After all, you don't have to spend the cost of materials on one of your utensils over and over again. So, if you're going on a foray, make sure you get all your stuff in shape beforehand.

6) Train with the help of a stone

Valheim's learning system is also typical for this type of game. By using tools or weapons, your character will get better at using them. Thus, when you use tools or a sword, you simultaneously skill the corresponding ability. But to improve your weapon skill, punching air holes won't help. So you need something to train with that won't hurt you.

A suitable object, which can be found everywhere in Valheim, is stones. Larger rocks are also ideal for training your skills. Just hit them to train your skill but be aware that the durability of your weapon will suffer. However, as shown in our PLITCH Valheim tips and tricks, you can easily repair them at the workbench.

7) How to level up skills

In general, your character gets experience for almost everything you do in the virtual world of Valheim. Regardless of whether you cut down trees with an axe, dismember monsters, swim, jump or sprint; you'll gain XP with every action.

Skills like sneaking, however, can only be improved when you are close to an enemy. Conveniently, this already works for animals like deer. By the way, you can find more on that in our Valheim tips and tricks on skills and leveling quickly.

8) Get the "rested" bonus

As in real life, your hero in Valheim does especially well when he is rested. If this is the case, he will receive the "Rested" bonus. This means that he has improved stamina and life regeneration. However, to benefit from this bonus, you need to make your home comfortable.

For this, all you need to do is build a bonfire inside. This will give you a homey feeling. However, you should make sure that you also take care of the smoke exhaust. For this, it is enough to knock a hole in the wall; or you can build a stylish fireplace. Campfire smoke will kill you if you don't do that.

9) Buffs through food

You also get certain benefits through food. While you don't have to rely on food for your survival, eating still grants you certain buffs. So, mushrooms, berries, or even meat will give you certain advantages.

By the way, this also applies to combinations. Mushrooms, cooked meat, and fried serpent meat are important at the beginning.

Of course, you can also get away with just berries. So, it’s not necessary to go hunting. Eating generally refills your health and energy and can be combined with buffs like healing over time.

10) Weapons can reduce movement speed

As usual in good role-playing games, your weapons may limit you. If your weapon has a high influence on your movement, you'll consequently slow down.

This generally includes all large items. Tools can also limit your Valheim character's ability to move. So, if you want to travel far, you should carefully consider which things to take with you on your journey and which are better left at home. If you hide your weapons, you can move around normally.

11) Bosses in Valheim

As in many survival games, you will find various bosses in Valheim. They play an important role in that they not only challenge your skills but also richly reward you for victory and ensure your advancement. In the following list, you’ll find the respective boss as well as its location:

  • Eikthyr: Meadows
  • The Elder: Black Forest
  • Bonemass: Swamp
  • Moder: Mountain
  • Yagluth: Plains

12) How can you fly in Valheim?

In general, flying is not an implemented ability of your Valheim character. Nevertheless, there are more or less complicated methods to make this possible. However, this requires either using the debug menu or still using mechanics that are the result of problems in the physics engine.

The easiest way to let your character glide through the world of Valheim is to activate PLITCH’s Fly Mode code. Just turn it on and enjoy the vast game landscape from above.

13) The merchant

A core element of Valheim is to gather resources and make something new from them. This is usually laborious and time-consuming to the maximum. However, there is also a merchant. His name is Haldor and you can get certain things from the dwarf that you can't produce. He offers:

  • Fishing Bait - 10 coins
  • Fishing Rod - 350 coins (allows you to fish)
  • Yule Hat - 100 coins
  • Ymir Flesh - 120 coins (needed to make the Iron Sledgehammer and Frostner)
  • Dverger Circlet - 620 coins
  • Megingjord - 450 coins (the belt that increases the carrying capacity to 300)

The fishing rod is especially interesting at the beginning.

To find the blue-skinned dwarf Haldor, you need to roam the Black Forest. Here you will inevitably track him down at some point if you wander around for some time.

On the map, you will then see him in the form of a backpack symbol. Caution: Nasty dangers lurk in the Black Forest. You should be well prepared and equipped before you enter it.

The burning question remains, how do you get the valuable coins for the merchant in Valheim? There are generally three ways to obtain them:

  • Search specifically for trolls in the Black Forest and kill them
  • Loot chests in dungeons or empty houses
  • Collect gems and sell them to the merchant

14) Health and stamina

Since Valheim is all about exploring the world, fighting battles, and defeating bosses aside from gathering resources and building, it's important to keep an eye on both stamina and health.

As already pointed out, you can already make a significant contribution to your character's health with the "Rested" buff and food intake. Sausages are particularly effective. Not only do they give you 60 health and 40 stamina, but they also regenerate your life energy for 27 minutes. To make a sausage you need:

1 piece of raw meat (from boars, deer, and wolves)
4 grape thistles (Swamp and Black Forest)
2 piles of guts (Draugr in villages and swamps)

Once you have found the thistles as well as the Draugr entrails, the dish will be unlocked. All you need now is a cauldron.

Similarly effective and easier to make is the turnip stew. This provides 50 health as well as stamina and regeneration of stats also over 27 minutes. For the turnip stew recipe, you need:

1 piece of raw meat (from boars, deer, wolves)
3 turnips (can also be planted; seeds are available in the swamp)
