Slots?

Am I missing something, or maybe I'm just dense. But under "ITEMS" there are all those "slot x" rules. I'm lost. What are those "slots"?? 

I press the corresponding numbers, and I hear the sound, but don't see anything change. So where/what are these "Slots"??
