Can't get any cheats to work

I exited the game in order to do something else. When I come back, I can't get any of the cheats to activate and I have read your tips, but none of them help me.

Are you playing via steam or gog?
Which cheats were you trying to use?
Were you able to activate the prepare?

I'm playing via Steam. I mainly use Godmode, but I tried Infinite mana and Instant Recruit (as ultimate evil). I tried all of them just to see if they would activate, but no dice.  I can't get the prepare to activate now. I was able to get to the prepare to activate before a few times, but it will not activate now.
