Level up cheats break in-game xp increases

You get the xp at the end of a battle but its not saved onto the character. So every battle xp gain starts from 0 again. Even when you look at the status screen, characters have the whole xp range to gain a new level (the xp from last battle is not there).

Hi, sorry I thought I updated this yesterday as I realised I didn't add that info! I am playing the ms version. 

Tried adding just 1 level to a character and sure enough it stops all xp for all characters but the jp points are still accrued.

So at the end of a battle you get 20xp and you can see it increase. If you check the character status afterwards you have 0 xp gained. Next battle you get 20xp and its counting from 0 but again this is not applied to the character after the fight.
