I've read the post that you can just launch the game from steam and use the menu after the game is launched. But that post was a while ago. I'm wondering if it's still possible, cause I don't like origin and I'd prefer not to use it if possible.

Even if you buy the game in steam it opens origin in the background. And yes it still works.
